If you are either planning to drive your car to a neighboring country or are planning on hiring a car when you get off your international flight, the question arises - should you need international car insurance? The answer to which, as usual, is that it depends, your travel car insurance needs depends on your circumstances.
First off confirm whether your existing policy will cover driving your car overseas.
For Americans taking a car north or south of the border, or British drivers heading over the Channel to the rest of Europe, the answer may well be that you are either already covered, or can be for a small additional premium.
However if you are planning on hiring a car overseas or borrowing one from local friends - you may well have to look into international car insurance options.
You may have some coverage from your local driving association if you are a member.
Also your general travel insurance may cover some expenses associated with car accidents overseas.
Another option is insurance offered by your credit card company, usually in return for you having booked flights or travel arrangements using the card.
Another important point to check is whether you are legal to drive in the country.
You will often need an International Drivers Permit to validate your home country's license.
This is not the case everywhere though - in the Cook Islands you will need to get a local license.
Make sure you find out what the local rules are an abide by them, not being a licensed driver will invalidate any insurance claim.
