Horror Movies

• Characters from horror movies are the stuff of nightmares for many who watch them. Internet sites such as Zombie Pumpkins are filled with designs based on frighteners such as Freddy Kreuger, Jason Voorhees, Frankenstein, Chucky, Pinhead, Nosferatu and Darth Maul. These are quite complicated so consider simplifying any designs to merely suggest the character rather than trying to accurately portray him.
  
  

Abstract

• Nightmares can take on abstract forms, so try incorporating this into the carving. Something simple is often more effective than over-the-top imagery. Experiment with forms on a piece of paper and transfer the design to the pumpkin once an idea is settled on. It doesn't matter if the design doesn't mean anything to anyone else.
  
  

Animals

• Some animals are commonly associated with nightmares. Relatively simple outlines of owls, cats, bats and octopi are all easily recognizable. More complicated designs may incorporate mythical creatures such as dragons, werewolves, centaurs, gremlins, griffin or hydra. Alternatively, create a unique creature based on a particular dream. The subconscious is a hotbed of creativity, though it takes a little practice to remember dreams.
  
  

Words

• Try carving words and symbols that feature in nightmares. Symbols require less work than words so are a good choice for the novice carver. For variety, translate words into other languages. Experiment with different font styles to give the carving more character.
