    Growth Habits

    • Mango trees grow to 90 feet in height with 80 feet width. They have deep root systems that require rich fertile soil that drains extremely well. Their root systems are sensitive to transplant shock and should be handled carefully. Growers often recommend using 50 percent native soil and 50 percent soil mixture high in organic content. Home gardeners use mature backyard organic compost to enrich soil prior to planting a mango tree.

    Fertilizer Needs

    • Fertilizing is recommended as part of the ongoing organic care for mango trees. They produce fruit each summer for up to 40 years. Horticulturists at the University of Hawaii recommend using a balanced fertilizer on mature trees and a high-phosphorus fertilizer on young trees. Mature organic compost fertilizer is slow-release, allowing tree roots to absorb nutrients as they are needed. High-phosphorus organic fertilizer for young mango trees is obtained from several natural sources.

    Sources of Organic Phosphorus

    • Growing plants and trees need phosphorus to form membranes and genetic material. Phosphorus is also needed for root, seed, flowers and fruit growth. Bat guano, bone meal, fish by-products and rock powders are common sources of phosphorus in organic fertilizers.. They are available as single ingredients or in organic fertilizer blends made specifically for tropical fruit trees. Vegetables and grain materials in mature compost are a source of phosphorus.

    Fertilizer Schedule

    • Mango trees thrive when fertilized with fish emulsion, mature compost or liquid seaweed four times per year. Apply after growth begins in February and again in May, August and September. Fertilize newly planted trees after their first growth appears. Apply a 3- to 4-inch layer of organic mulch in diameter around the tree to the drip-line. Mulch provides weed control and a slow-release source of nutrients.
