Skin Rashes? Dermatologist? Maybe It"s Really a Food Allergy

A skin rash can be a symptom of a large number of conditions.
It can be caused by an infection, skin disease such as eczema, an immune system disorder, heat and other factors including a food allergy.
A skin rash caused by the majority of the mentioned factors is typically reddish and may cause itching, pain or discomfort, while its appearance and the accompanying symptoms do not always reveal the underlying cause.
For example, eczema is not necessarily eczema, but it can be a symptom of a food allergy.
Any unexplained rash requires medical evaluation, especially if it does not go away on its own or if it is accompanied by other disturbing symptoms.
In some cases, a skin rash is caused by conditions that do not require dermatological treatment.
Eczema, also referred to as atopic dermatitis is usually treated by a dermatologist, but dermatological treatment is not necessary nor effective if the skin rash is caused by a food allergy.
In this case, the skin rash typically occurs shortly after ingestion of allergy-causing foods.
Some studies imply that about 40% of people who suffer from mild to moderate atopic dermatitis have a food allergy.
In addition, a skin rash caused by a food allergy can appear very similar to eczema.
Ingestion of allergy-causing foods can cause different skin reactions including acute urticaria or hives, angioedema or swelling, flushing and eczema.
A skin rash can also be accompanied by a variety of other symptoms including itching, upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and dizziness.
Food allergies are relatively common and it is estimated they affect about 7% of children and 4% of adults due to the fact that many children tend to out grow their food allergy.
When a food sensitivity is developed during adulthood, it typically lasts for life, caused by an overreaction of the immune system to certain types of food.
The immune system perceives them as harmful invaders and triggers a release of certain chemicals, which in turn cause an allergic reaction.
Sometimes even the tinniest amount of allergy-causing food can trigger a reaction.
Foods that cause allergic reaction vary from one patient to another.
The most common allergy-causing foods in children are peanuts, milk, wheat, eggs and soy, while the majority of adults are allergic to peanuts or shellfish.
Most adults with a food sensitivity developed it during early childhood.
No single cure exists for food allergies.
Its treatment is usually based on avoidance of allergy-causing foods and antihistamine medications that are taken in case of ingesting food that cause an allergic reaction.
Antihistamines can help relieve symptoms including skin rash and hives, in mild to moderate food allergies.
