Book Review - Outliers - The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell

103 7
Why do some people succeed in life while others struggle? Is it a difference in intelligence? Genetics? Environment? Opportunity? Or just plain luck? What's the truth behind the "self-made" man (or woman)? Can anyone truly start from absolute nothing and ascend to great heights completely on their own? In Outliers: The Story of Success, author Malcolm Gladwell gives us his take on the success phenomenon.
Using a wide and vast array of examples of people who've "made it" - and some who didn't but maybe should have, Gladwell puts success into perspective.
Some of the theories presented do seem a lot like luck to me - for instance, the year one is born may be extremely important to your changes of success in a given field.
Gladwell also covers the 10,000 hours principle.
Basically, this idea is that someone who practices a particular discipline for 10,000 hours or more (which works out to roughly 30-40 hours per week for approximately 20 years) is almost destined to achieve high success in that area.
Examples given include the Beatles and Bill Gates.
So its not just the haircuts then...
But there's more than just time spent honing a skill, Gladwell sites differences in culture.
Why did it take so long for a certain Korean airline to reduce plane crashes? Why are Asian kids so much better at math? It has more to do with their culture, customs and language than plain old hard work.
Outliers: The Story of Success is a fascinating book.
Literally a page-turner that you won't want to put down.
Its a breakthrough on why certain people attain wild success and others just don't seem to be able to reach that level.
Its about time, place, opportunity and more.
