    Function

    • Nortriptyline works by increasing levels of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and serotonin, while blocking acetylcholine.

    Side Effects

    • Common side effects include dry mouth, constipation, change in appetite and drowsiness.

    Dosage

    • Normal dosage for adults is 25 mg three to four times daily. In elderly patients, dosage should be divided up to a maximum dosage of 30 to 50 mg per day.

    Warning

    • Per the FDA, any patient with major depression disorder may experience worsening symptoms of depression until significant remission occurs.

    History

    • Nortriptyline was approved by the FDA in November 1964 under the brand name Aventyl Hydrocholride.
