The Effects of PVC on Steel
Plumbing
- The most common use of PVC pipes is in home plumbing. PVC pipes do not conduct electricity and are not subject to the types of electrochemical reactions that are common with metal pipes. Even though stainless steel pipes resist oxidation, they are susceptible to what is called "rouging," where metallic impurities in a water supply gather to form rust and eat away at the oxide coating on the metal. PVC pipes are easy to work with, even by amateur plumbers, and are strong enough to handle the largest pressure loads a household plumbing system entails.
