    • 1). Calculate whether your income was greater than your exemptions for the tax year. Exemptions will vary by tax year and individual taxpayer circumstances. Because you were a part-year resident of Indiana, you are only required to file an annual return if your income exceeds your exemptions for the tax year in question.

    • 2). File an Indiana annual tax return if while living outside Indiana you received income from Indiana during the tax year in question. This requirement to file exists regardless of current year Indiana exemptions.

    • 3). File Form IT-40RNR if you are a full-year resident of Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania or Wisconsin and you received only wages, salaries, tips or other compensation from Indiana. If you are not a full-year resident of one of these states or received additional types of income, file Form IT-40PNR.

    • 4). File a joint Indiana income tax return if you filed a joint federal income tax return. Likewise, you will file a single return in Indiana if you filed a single federal return in the same tax year.
