Find out how Danica McKellar combines beauty and brains on "Transformers Rescue Bots.
Here's what you probably know about gorgeous actress Danica McKellar: she rose to fame quickly, starring on The Wonder Years for six seasons; she recently wrapped eight weeks on ABC's wildly popular Dancing with the Stars; and she was the voice behind Miss Martian on Cartoon Network's beloved series, Young Justice.
Looking past Danica's classic beauty and fit bod (it's tough, I know), here's what you'll find: she graduated summa cum laude from UCLA with a degree in mathematics; she is a New York Times bestelling author of four math books aimed at young girls; and she hosts a palindrome contest every Thursday on Twitter.
Beauty and brains? A knockout combination.
On Saturday, May 31, 2014, Danica will bring that knockout combination to an episode of Transformers Rescue Bots on the Hub. Transformers Rescue Bots was created by the same team behind Transformers Prime. The animated series is about a small group of Autobots who have a mission from Optimus Prime to protect and learn about humans. Autobots Heatwave, Boulder, Blades and Chase are stationed on a technologically advanced island off the Eastern seaboard, working alongside a human family of first responders including a police chief, firefighter, rescue pilot and engineer. The cartoon series sends a positive message about teamwork, heroism, family and friends.
In "Buddy System," the Rescue Team pairs up with randomly selected partners for a nature hike. But each pair finds themselves magnetically shackled and stuck together after an accident crushes the keys to the shackles. Later, after escaped poisonous snakes begin to overrun Griffin Rock, the team must learn to work with their partner to save themselves and the rest of the town.
Danica McKellar guest stars as Hayley, a botanist to whom Kade takes a special liking and who Frankie learns has more to offer than her good looks. Hayley uses her intelligence to help the kids stay safe during the venomous snake attack.
Danica was kind enough to answer a few questions about her upcoming Transformers Rescue Bots role.
Q: Tell me a little about your character, Hayley.
A: (Danica McKellar) Hayley is Kade Burns’ girlfriend. She is really sweet and cute and not everyone realizes that she is also very smart.
Q: Hayley shows young Frankie she's got brains and beauty. What does that mean to you?
There have been women since the beginning of history who have surprised the world with their ability and their intelligence, so it’s a little odd that this continues to be something that surprises people. It is one of my main issues in life to break down stereotypes that would lead people to believe that women can’t be both smart and capable just because they are beautiful.
I write my math books in the style of teen magazines because I want to attract the very girls who are obsessed with Pop Culture and who might be most susceptible to believing that they have to choose between being cute and fabulous or smart and savvy.
Q: You're a talented voice-over actress. What part of the Rescue Bots process was your favorite? Working with the director? Meeting castmates?
I love voice-over work! I love the interaction with the director and with all the amazingly talented voice-over actors who I’ve had the privilege of working with. In this case I got a special treat: to work with Jason Marsden who I’ve been friends with since I’m 13 years-old. He is actually the one who got me into voice-over work and apparently he is also the one who suggested me for the role of Hayley. I also had the pleasure of working with Ginny McSwain a few times and she is truly an inspiration.
Q: Your 'Rescue Bots' episode is about escaped venomous snakes. Are you afraid of snakes, or fascinated by them? (I'm mortally terrified.)
I am not afraid of the non-poisonous kind of snakes. In fact, my brother used to have a pet snake and it was pretty wild to play with it. But like most people I have a healthy fear of anything dangerous, including venomous snakes!
Q: If you could be one of these Bots, which would it be, and why?
The entire show is adorable, but, of course, I’m partial to Jason Marsden’s character Kade Burns.
Q: What message would you like kids to take away from the episode?
The message I would like kids to take away from my character is that it’s OK to be yourself – don’t hide from your smarts and your abilities. You just might even end up making a new friend.
