Project Management & Online Learning
- The Project Management Institute offers five certificates: the Project Management Professional (PMP) certificate; the Certified Associate of Project Management (CAPM); the Program Management Professional (PgMP) certificate; the PMI Scheduling Professional (PMI-SP) certificate; and the PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP) certificate.
- Professionals interested in taking the PMI certification examinations should be sure that their choice of online learning institute follows the PMI guidelines and offers examination preparation for the specific certificate they wish to obtain. The PMI provides a searchable list of all approved Registered Education Providers (REPs) for students interested in online learning.
- The PMI and its REPs offer various courses online, including real-time courses, pre-recorded course for students to study online whenever they like, and combined courses with online training, but also some real-world project management activities such as group work or class discussion.
- Through the PMI's eSeminarsWorld, an online extension of the PMI's SeminarsWorld Program, candidates can take online courses, usually of two weeks' duration, which focus on specific areas of project management, to help cover in detail specific parts of the examination.
The PMI's online training features seminars, discussion questions, individual homework, project management group assignments with classmates and feedback from qualified instructors.
Online learning courses usually will include audio and visual materials, discussion topics, group projects, partner exercises, role-playing exercises, case studies and self-tests online to help prepare for the examination. Each course will carry a certain number of Professional Development Units (PDUs) which will count toward the number of hours required to be permitted to sit for the examination. The PDUs are also required for people who wish to maintain their Project Management Certification. - To sit the PMP exam, candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent and five years of project management experience, or a Bachelor's degree and three years of project management. Both types of candidate also need 35 hours of project management education, which can be completed online. They will also have to sit for a four-hour multiple choice exam that contains 200 questions. Students can obtain and take practice tests online to prepare for their examination. Once they pass the exam, they can receive their certification.
