Is Brent Celek poised for a bounce back season?

The tight end position has been highly discussed this offseason around Philadelphia.

While Zach Ertz appears ready to break loose at any minute, no one seems to be talking about one of the longest tenured players on the squad, Brent Celek.

It’s understandable considering his diminished role in 2014, but the 30-year-old should be utilized more in the upcoming season.

During his time in Philadelphia, Celek has never been a dangerous receiving threat, but he has always been a steady target.

He’s had three seasons of five or more touchdowns, including his career year in 2009 when he caught 76 passes for 971 yards and eight touchdowns.

From 2010 to 2012, Celek saw 78 or more targets his way each season. The past two years, though, the Cincinnati product has seen his targets dip to around 50 with 32 catches in both 2013 and 2014. That has something to do with Ertz’ arrival and a lot to do with how Chip Kelly uses him as a primary blocker in many situations.

His blocking ability should pay off even more this year, however, with the three-headed attack Kelly has in play. If the team rides the coattails of these running back, that means Celek will be on the field a lot. The more he gets on the field, the more opportunities he’ll have. For every few plays he’s out there in a run formation, there will be a play where he is able to sneak out on a play-action and make a play with his hands.

This may be Ertz’ year to shine, but with the two tight end set trend taking over the league, there’s definitely a place for Celek to get his touches in this offense.
