Jamaican Labor Law
- According to the Trade Union Act, persons under the age of 18, who are considered minors under Jamaican law, can become members of trade unions. Minors must be over the age of 16 to become members, and while they enjoy all other rights of membership, they cannot serve on a union management committee.
- The Employment (Equal Pay for Men and Women) Act ensures that men and women who are doing the same work receive equal pay. Where women receive favorable conditions of employment with respect to pregnancy and childbirth, this does not constitute discrimination in favor of women, according to the act.
- In Jamaica, employees who work for an employer for 110 days or more in a given year are entitled to holiday pay. The amount of holiday pay received depends upon the number of days worked in the year and how long the employee has worked for the employer. If the employee has worked for the employer for more than 10 years, and has worked for more than 220 days in a given year, he qualifies for the maximum statutory holiday with pay of three weeks.
