    Water

    • Sinus congestion can be quelled simply by drinking plenty of water daily. Nasal congestion is due to thick mucus that causes swelling in sinus cavities. Water helps dilute it, causing it to thin out and therefore making expulsion much easier. It can also flush out toxins and bacteria which contribute heavily to congestion.

    Steam

    • Steam can open up the sinuses and promote drainage. One of the most effective methods is sitting in a steam room. An all-encompassing blast of steam can open up the nasal passages and airways to the lungs to loosen up phlegm. If you do not have access to a steam room, you can create your own with a hot shower. Simply close the door and turn on the water as hot as possible. Do not get in the shower when the water is extremely hot or you may burn your skin. Inhale the steam from the shower deeply to open the sinuses. Turn down the temperature of the water to very warm and take a shower. A warm shower or bath can also help treat congestion.

    Garlic

    • Garlic is an herb that has both antibacterial and antifungal properties. It has a very potent smell that can open up the sinuses. There are a few different options for using garlic as a sinus congestion remedy. You could take garlic dietary supplement pills or use garlic for cooking purposes. This can help sinus problems internally. The other choice is to chop up some cloves, place in a bowl of boiling hot water, and inhale the aromatic steam.

    See a Doctor

    • If you have severe sinus congestion that affects everyday life, it may be necessary to see a doctor. Home remedies are great to try first, but if they do not help, seek the advice of a medical professional. When nasal congestion is chronic, you may need antibiotics to eradicate infection, corticosteroids for inflammation or allergy shots if allergens are the culprit.
