How to Cover Extension Cords Laying on Stage Floors

    • 1). Determine the best location to run your cords so all cables cross the stage at a single point, or one point on each side of the stage. For larger stages with many cords, simple do your best to minimize the number of individual cable runs.

    • 2). Arrange the cords so they lie neatly together in groups and tack them down with a strip of gaffer's tape across the length of the cord every few feet. This is just to hold them in place as you work on them, not to cover the cords, so only use as much tape as you need to hold them down.

    • 3). Set a piece of low-pile carpet scrap that blends in with your stage flooring color over the cords. If space is a concern, cut the carpet so it is about a foot wide, which should be enough to cover most extension cord runs.

    • 4). Tape all the way around the carpet, adding extra tape where the cords enter and leave the carpet to hold everything in place. If necessary, use multiple carpet pieces for long runs of cable.

    • 5). Walk the stage with your performers before the show, pointing out where each carpet is. This will help keep them from tripping during the performance.
