How to Buy Green Power

    • 1). Check to see if green power is available to purchase in your state by visiting the U.S. Department of Energy website (see Resources below). Green power is available to purchase in most states, but it is not available to everyone yet.

    • 2). Call your local power company and ask about green power options if they are available in your state. Choose to have a portion or all of your power supplied from green sources.

    • 3). Buy green power by purchasing renewable energy certificates, or RECs (see Resources below). When you buy these certificates, you help to support the green power movement.

    • 4). Take matters into your own hands by investing in solar power for your home. There are various ways that you can do this. In nearly every state, there are companies who provide financing for solar roof panels, which can supply you with enough power for months, depending on how much sun you get in your area. This can cost $10,000 and up.

    • 5). Save on your electric bill while also buying green power by purchasing a solar-powered attic fan. The total cost and installation is usually less than $700. Heat rises, and in the summer it can get very hot in the attic. When the attic is cooler, the air conditioning unit won’t need to kick on as often. This can result in a huge savings on your electric bill during the hot summer months.
