Banos, Montanita, Cuenca, Quito, Otavalo, Ecuador, South America, what to do, what to see
There's no doubt that Ecuador is an adventure lovers paradise. With 10 mountains over 5000m many people travel to the country for hiking alone.
But if you don't like to hike or want to pass on the adrenalin rush experience there are still lots of things to do and see in Ecuador. The country has Spring-like weather all year long so it's never a bad time to visit, however it does rain a bit more from January-May.
Below is a two week itinerary for those beginning in Quito who want to experience the culture without breaking too much of a sweat. Note, this itinerary does not include the Galapagos, however it would make a lovely addition.
Quito 3 days
The capital city of Ecuador is not just a jumping point to the area's many volcanos but also home to a UNESCO heritage site with the old part of town. On the first day take a walking tour to familiarize yourself with the city, then spend the following days at the food markets, museums and great restaurants.
Like any major city, please be aware of your belongings. Unfortunately many people are pickpocketed or robbed on the streets. However, it is very rare that anyone is harmed so there is no need to be afraid, simply do not carry large amounts of cash and be aware of what you have in your pockets.
Otavalo 2 days
Otavalo is less than two hours from Quito and easily accessible by bus. If you can arrive Friday night to relax, grab dinner and call it an early night.
Saturday morning rise early to head to the animal market where locals buy and sell farm animals. Then grab a quick breakfast and head over to the main market to buy lots of local handicrafts, but be ready to bargain as it's part of the Otavalo market experience.
Baños 2 days
Grab an early morning bus and head to Banos. While it is popular amongst adventurer travelers for its jungle hikes, bungee jumping and white water rafting, there are plenty of other things to do in this small town. The area is filled with natural hot springs and in town there are many shockingly affordable places to get massages and other spa treatments.
Cuenca 3 days
While it is only the third largest city in Ecuador, it is by far the prettiest. Colonial streets line cobblestone roads making for a perfect day of wandering around with a camera. For foodies, the city has a number of vegetarian restaurants including El Pariso, so famous for its juices even carnivorous locals eat there.
Accommodation generally does not need to be booked in advance, except during the city holiday in November when it's nearly impossible to find a room.
Montanita 3 days
Known by many as one of the best places to surf in South America, Montanita attracts a young, beach-loving crowd. But if you're not up for learning to surf, there is plenty of beach area to settle down with a good book and simply admire the waves. If you are looking to be a little more productive with your time there are a number of Spanish schools where you can brush up on your Spanish.
When the sun goes down there is an active nightlife, something to keep in mind when choosing accommodation as some hostels and hotels can be loud. But don't shy away from the area if you want to get some sleep, there are surprisingly great restaurants in the area and seafood is always a crowd pleaser.
Travel Tip: Ecuador is very easy to travel by bus. There is no need to book in advance, simply show up at the bus station and you won't wait more than 30 minutes to catch one in your direction. It is safe to put your bag under the bus but keep your day bag on your lap, never on the floor or up above as some thieves will steal things in it. If someone tries to help you or ask you to put it above you simply insist you want it on your lap.
