How to Acquire a Driving Record in the United States
- 1). Visit the local branch of your DMV and ask for a form titled "Request for Your Own Driver's License Record." The title may vary slightly by state.
- 2). Bring the form home and fill it out. You will need to have your driver's license number handy, as well as your car's VIN number and personal information such as your address and birth date. Note that some states let you fill it out and pay the fee at your local DMV branch, while others require that you mail it to the DMV headquarters at your state's capital.
- 3). Pay the fee. You will be charged between $3 and $8 per record ordered, depending on your state. In some states, you can choose to have the record either mailed directly to you or mailed or faxed directly to a potential employer.
- 4). Mail the completed form and fee to the DMV headquarters at the state capital, or give it to the cashier at your local DMV, if your state allows this (California is one state that does allow this).
