How to Be an Emo Girl
Instructions
1Listen to as much original emo music as you can and then gradually get to more recent bands so you have the cultural knowledge to match your emo style. Be sure to brush up on your knowledge of Fugazi, Sunny Day Real Estate and more punk influences like Operation Ivy, The Juliana Theory and Jimmy Eats World.
2
Make your hair and makeup palette black by using heavy black eye liner and dyeing your hair jet black (if it isn't naturally black). Straight hair is preferred but not essential. In all cases, adding streaks of an alternate color such as white or even pink will help you be an emo girl.
3
Keep your pants tight, black and short at the shins. High socks with an ironically cute pattern (stars, pink skulls or even hearts) are a good emo girl accessory. On top, black hoodies or sweatshirts over tight T-shirts or tank tops are a good way to be emo.
4
Appear quiet, even if you're talkative, by keeping your bangs low. To do some extra emo styling, style your hair so that your bangs cover one eye, leaving the other peeping out. Add some pale lipstick or lip gloss to the mix.
5
Defer to the comic character Emily the Stranger, created by Robert Reger, on all questions of emo girl styling. If you're having trouble find the right kind of emo girl to be just take your cues from Emily until you come into your own as an emo girl.
