D-Rose impressive in return vs. Pistons

It turns out those few extra days off were quite beneficial for Derrick Rose.

The Chicago Bulls' star point guard returned to the lineup Monday against the Detroit Pistons after missing the last two games due to sprained ankles, and Rose looked mighty fine in a 102-91 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

When we last saw Rose, he played at much less than 100 percent against the Milwaukee Bucks last Wednesday.

There was drama surrounding his status, and it was a bit of a surprise that he suited up in Milwaukee when he admitted the day before that he didn't want to play unless he was 100 percent.

Rose was passive and floated around the perimeter for much of the Bucks game, but it was a different story against Detroit. Rose was aggressive attacking the basket from the tip, and he finished with a game-high 24 points on 9-of-20 shooting and 2-of-5 on three-pointers.

12 of Rose's 20 shot attempts came from the paint, according to NBA.com, and much of his damage was done at the rim. Rose also showed some savvy ability in the post, taking advantage of the smaller D.J. Augustin on several occasions. Rose's final bucket of the night, which proved to be the dagger, was a strong take out of the post over Augustin.

Not only did Rose do a good job scoring, but he was solid as a facilitator as well. There were a few especially nifty passes, including a no-look drive-and-kick to Jimmy Butler for a clutch three late in the fourth quarter.

That was one of Rose's seven dimes on the night.

The Rose/Butler backcourt is something Bulls fans have been itching to see for quite some time, and it didn't disappoint. With Rose sidelined much of last season, Butler really struggled with his outside shot, and one explanation for that was a lack of open looks because Rose wasn't there to attract the defense.

Now that Rose and Butler are both healthy, the swingman should get plenty of open shots. That was certainly the case against the Pistons, as 10 of Butler's 12 shots were uncontested, according to SportVU. Butler made five of those shots, including the big three late in the game. The 25-year-old scored 19 points as his hot start to the season continued, and the way he's playing, a max offer sheet is looking more and more likely next offseason.

The Bulls got solid contributions from all over, with five players scoring in double figures, a feat that has been accomplished in every game this season. Pau Gasol and Joakim Noah both notched double-doubles, and the big-man duo combined for 30 points, 29 rebounds and 10 assists. Their rebounding efforts were huge for a Bulls team that entered the game struggling on the defense glass. Chicago outrebounded a big Detroit squad by three, ending a streak of six consecutive games where the Bulls were outrebounded.

While Rose looked great and the Bulls got the win, not everything was hunky dory. After playing arguably their best half of the year in the first half, the Bulls really struggled offensively in the second half, letting the Pistons get back into it. A 17-point second-half lead was trimmed to just two, but Chicago was able to survive thanks to Rose and Butler, as well as some idiocy from Josh Smith.

Another disappointment was the fact that rookies Doug McDermott and Nikola Mirotic only played five minutes apiece, with all those minutes coming in the first half. This game was a tough matchup for Mirotic, so it was a bit more understandable that he didn't see much time. However, McDermott could have been used more, especially when the Bulls were struggling offensively in the second half. Butler totaled 43 minutes on the night and played the entire second half, which seems like overkill this early in the season. But that's Tom Thibodeau.

Enough about that, though! Derrick Rose looked great and the Bulls won by double-digits. There's still plenty to clean up, and the Toronto Raptors will provide a stiff test on TNT Thursday night.
