Meds for Treatment of Anxiety
- Antidepressants used to treat anxiety include Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Effexor and Tofranil. Benzodiazepine medications, such as Klonoin, Valium, Ativan, Librium and Xanax, also treat anxiety.
- Antidepressants relieve anxiety by stimulating the neurotransmitters in the brain. Benzodiazepines are sedatives that calm the symptoms of anxiety.
- Most antidepressants take at least a few weeks to be fully effective against anxiety. Benzodiazepines are a short-term solution and aren't considered safe as long-term maintenance medications.
- Psychotherapy is an excellent anxiety treatment, especially when used in combination with prescription medication. This form of therapy concentrates on stress reduction and behavior changes.
- It isn't uncommon to become addicted to benzodiazepines, which is why most doctors prescribe antidepressants first. Side effects of benzodiazepines include reduced muscle coordination, drowsiness, forgetfulness and problems with balance.
