Information on Shitzu Maltese Puppies

    The Facts

    • To produce a Shitzu Maltese, a breeder crosses a Maltese with a Shitzu. Because this breed is not yet established, the only predictable way to produce a Shitzu Maltese puppy is to breed two established dogs; breeding two Shitzu Maltese is not a dependable way to produce puppies. This leads to a lack of breed standard for these dogs.

    Features

    • Shitzu Maltese come in a wide range of colors and sizes, due to this lack of breed standard. They all have long, silky hair that can be black, brown or tan with white, or pure white. They weigh from 8 to 15 pounds, and have flat faces and circular eyes reminiscent of both Shitzu and Maltese breed standards.

    Personality

    • These dogs have bright and bubbly personalities. They are very intelligent, and do well with training, but can also be quite stubborn. They are loving to their families, and have playful streaks that last through puppyhood into their adult years.

    Grooming

    • The biggest requirement for Shitzu Maltese is grooming. Like their parent dogs, they have long hair that tangles and gets dirty. Regular bathing and brushing are necessary to keep the dogs clean and free of mats.

    Considerations

    • Hybrid breeds, and especially those that aren't set, present a risk for potential owners. There is no guarantee that a breeding was between two healthy, purebred dogs, or that the result will be good. Hybrid dogs do not have guaranteed personalities or features, and should only be purchased from trusted, proven breeders.
