Science Project on How to Make Olive Oil From Scratch
- 1). Obtain fresh olives. Use olives harvested after the first autumn rains. This extra moisture plumps the olives, ensuring olives that contain more oil.
- 2). Make vertical slits in six olives. Cut deeply enough into the olive so that you cut through to the pit.
- 3). Place the olives in a glass with a stem. Place that glass in a larger, flat glass.
- 4). Fill the glass with the olives up halfway with water. The water should cover the olives.
- 5). Lay a tea strainer on top of the olives and place some marbles on the tea strainer to hold it down.
- 6). Add enough water to the glass so that it reaches the top.
- 7). Wait 24 hours. The pressure of the water will release the oil from the olives. Since oil is lighter than water, it will float to the top of the glass and spill over into the cup.
- 8). Look in your bottom cup to find the pure olive oil.
