Microsoft LifeCam Is Not Connecting to Skype
- If the Microsoft LifeCam webcam isn't connecting to Skype for video recording and video calls, the messaging program is probably not configured to work with the webcam. After signing into Skype, access the program's options from the "Tools" menu. From the "Select webcam" drop-down box on the "General" tab, the Microsoft LifeCam should be selected. If it isn't, select the webcam and then configure your video-sharing settings. If the Microsoft LifeCam webcam isn't displayed in the drop-down box, the webcam is not working properly or is improperly installed.
- Microsoft LifeCams require software and drivers to connect to the computer. Software and drivers vary with different models. If you're missing these components, the webcam won't connect to Skype. Connection problems also occur if the drivers are outdated or damaged. Microsoft provides software and drivers for 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems. They are available for download directly from Microsoft's website. In addition to drivers, Skype requires the latest version of DirectX to stream video. DirectX is a hardware acceleration for graphics cards. It's also available on Microsoft's website.
- In some cases, Skype won't recognize a Microsoft LifeCam webcam that's incompatible with your computer system. Microsoft provides webcams for a variety of Windows operating systems. Some webcams support standard-definition video while others display video in high-definition. If the webcam you're using requires an operating system and hardware such as a minimum memory, graphics card and processor speed to function, the device won't work well if the computer doesn't contain necessary hardware. Before connecting a LifeCam to your computer, refer to the device's manual or documentation for information on system requirements.
- Occasionally, Skype won't recognize your Microsoft LifeCam if you're using an older version that's incompatible with a newer webcam. Clicking the "Help" menu and clicking "About Skype" tells you what version you're using. If you're using an older version of Skype, updating to a newer version improves webcam connection for video display. In addition, installing the latest Windows updates using Windows Update found on the Start menu updates vital system components to improve connection. Your LifeCam will not connect to Skype if another program is already using the webcam. Closing any program using the webcam automatically frees it.
