Maintaining a healthy and good looking lawn can be as easy or hard as you make it and depending on how important an attractive lawn is to you various steps can be taken to improve its appearance and health.
Simple changes to your fertilizer, cutting length and even when you water can have a positive effect; however it's also possible to take more drastic actions such as detaching and aerating to really ensure you get the best results.
The simplest and most obvious way to visually improve your lawn is to remove weeds.
This can be a very time consuming process: using a weeder (fishtail, Japanese or leverage) is an easy way to speed things up but an herbicide can also be used if weeds are extremely prominent and noticeable throughout.
Removing weeds is a step that should always be taken when looking to improve your lawn and is a good basis to begin bigger improvements.
Detaching and aerating are an excellent way to improve your lawn and really limit the amount of weeds that you'll have growing.
Detaching involves getting rid of all the organic material that can build about between the blades of grass and roots; this build up can cause dead patches to form on your grass and give spaces for weeds to grow.
Keep in mind that once you have done this your lawn will look in worse shape than when you started, that being said your lawn is fine and in three to four weeks it will recover.
Before aerating it is important to inspect your lawn; if your roots don't extend past two inches, your lawn should be aerated.
Water your lawn one to two days before you start and cover the lawn with compost once you have finished.
Aerating allows the roots to grown thicker and deeper, providing a strong base for a healthy lawn to grow.
However, there are easier ways to improve your lawn that require little equipment and simply a change how you take care of your grass.
When it comes to fertilizing make sure you limit that amount, over fertilizing will make your grass grow a lot quicker but will also cause it to become more susceptible to disease; once a year during Autumn (September) is a good time.
You should also take notice of the kind of fertilizer you're using.
The amount of nitrogen is the most important aspect to consider: grass supplied with fertilizer of very high amounts of nitrogen will grow faster and thicker but much weaker.
Three numbers can be found on packaging when buying; these represent how much of the fertilizer is nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium: you should not use fertilizer that is more than 10% nitrogen.
The other numbers are less important and are not critical when deciding on the kind of fertilizer you want.
Finally, keep your grass long; between three to four inches, this will make the grass healthier, shade out weed seeds and encourage deeper roots.
It is the easiest way to improve your lawn This along with the many other small and large steps you can take to improve your grass will ultimately ensure that your lawn is not only healthy but perfect.
