Attention Deficit Disorder and Kids
Attention Deficit Disorder is a little different than Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
Both have the inability to pay attention factor.
For instance, your child may not pay attention to directions you are giving him or her.
He or she may only be able to do one thing at a time that you ask of the child.
When giving directions ask him/her to, "Please go get the book on the table.
" Do not ask your question with multiple directions such as to, "Please go get the book on the table, bring me a glass of water and turn off the kitchen light.
" The ADD child will not be able to complete the task.
This may frustrate you, in turn, upset your child.
The child with ADD cannot focus due to not being able to block out all of the noises and actions going on in his/her environment.
This makes learning in a school classroom especially difficult.
Attention Deficit Disorder does not have the hyperactivity symptom.
The child with ADHD will seem as if he/she cannot sit still.
He or she is constantly on the go, jumping from one task to another before completing the first task, and unable to sit for very long.
The child may be able to sit for a long time if he/she is watching a movie that is highly interesting to the child.
This is also true with video games the child truly enjoys.
Some parents think that their child must not have ADD or ADHD as the child can sit for an hour or more.
This is unfortunately not true.
The television is making all of the movement actions for the child.
A child with ADHD can sit longer for something he/she truly enjoys versus something that is very boring to the child.
Basically, the ADD child will have all of the symptoms an ADHD child has minus the hyperactivity.
The term ADD will no longer be used.
All forms of this disorder will be called ADHD.
The ADHD will be broken down into three categories: Predominantly Inattentive Type Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type Combined Type Attention Deficit Disorder falls in the Predominantly Inattentive Type.
This type of categorizing may make it easier for people to understand.
If your child is thought to have ADD please call your doctor and he or she will diagnose your child and start your child on a plan on ADD treatment.
