Foreign Films in Phoenix

Although they may be found in a mainstream megaplex theater from time to time, generally speaking the only traditional movie theater with standard large screen in the Greater Phoenix area where you will find foreign films is the Harkins Camelview theater near Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall.

In downtown Phoenix you'll find a unique spot for ages 21+ with a "microcinema setting" called FilmBar. There are 70 seats in a sound-proofed room dedicated to screening new, classic, cult and local independent films. They serve beer and wine and traditional movie snacks. There's no minimum food purchase.

Cinema Latino operates Spanish-language movie theatres in the United Status, and focuses on addressing the cinematic needs of the Latino consumer by way of exhibition and distribution of first run Hollywood movies subtitled or dubbed in Spanish.

Single Large Screen Movie Theaters

There are three single screen theaters in the Valley that show regular first run movies. All three are owned by Harkins. The Valley Art Theater near ASU is an historic building in Tempe. It was built in 1938 by Red Harkins, and used to be known as the College Theater. This single theater was the start of the Harkins movie theater chain, now run by Red Harkins' son, Dan Harkins. They now show art films.

The Cine Capri was a single screen large theater located at 24th Street and Camelback that opened in 1966. Unfortunately, that theater was demolished in 1998. Dan Harkins built the new Cine Capri in conjunction with the Harkins Scottsdale 101 14-screen multiplex. There is also a small museum with memorabilia from the original Cine Capri. In 2007, Harkins opened another Cine Capri at the Tempe Marketplace complex.

There are more than 200 IMAX theatres operating in 35 countries, and we have six of them in town (and there's one at the Grand Canyon). With screens over 8 stories high, you can't just show any movie at an IMAX. It used to be that only short documentary-type films with great effects were shown at IMAX, but there are now popular feature length films being mastered to fit the IMAX format.
