Crowded House Will Not Be Dreaming It"s Over As He Races in to 2009
Did the recent Group One Racing Post Trophy produce the winner of the 2009 Epsom Derby? Crowded House was the winner of the race and in the Brian Meehan trained Colt, we may well have seen a future racing superstar.
The manner of his victory was as stunning as it was sensational; he came very late with an electrifying burst of pace that left his rivals for dead, winning by over three lengths from a two year old field packed with quality.
Jockey, Jamie Spencer was clearly impressed and also delighted that he had finally managed to win a Group One this season.
His horse even had the time to veer off his racing line and although hampering the second and third horse, it was later viewed by the Stewards that it was accidental in nature and the result, quite rightly stood.
Meehan is not certain where he will go next with Crowded House, it all depends on how he winters and trains on, but clearly a horse with so much ability and pace will be aiming ultimately for the Classics in 2009 and certainly the Bookmakers believe that he will be at least a leading 2000 Guineas prospect.
He has also earned a place as one of the leading contenders for the Epsom Derby where he is second favourite behind the John Oxx trained Sea the Stars, winner of the Juddmonte Beresford Stakes at the Curragh.
Clearly Meehan sees him as a Derby horse rather than a Guineas, but such was his victory he could quite easily be considered for both.
If he trains on he will be a major force in the Classics no matter what.
The Racing Post trophy has produced four Epsom Derby winners in the past, three of them from the recent past in the form of High Chaparral in 2001, Motivator in 2004 and most recently, Authorised in 2006.
The other winner was Reference Point in 1986.
Last year the race was won in very similar fashion by the Godolphin trained, Ibn Khaldoun, he broke the race time record when storming home but he failed miserably to reproduce that form again as a three year old.
Meehan will be hoping that Crowded House does not suffer in similar vein and he recognises that the winter could be a very important period in the Colt's racing career.
Unlike last season there has been no one horse that has dominated the two year colt picture.
Jim Bolger's New Approach was the much hyped two year old last year and he vindicated that hype by winning the Epsom Derby and finishing runner up in both the English and Irish 2000 Guineas.
He also finished the season by winning the Champion Stakes.
Crowded House is not thought to be in that league but neither are any of the other leading two year olds and therefore he might well be the pick.
He is certainly a horse that the racing world will watch with interest in 2009.
