The Load Less Traveled
Professional truck drivers, particularly owner/operators, collectively breathed a sigh of relief last year when fuel prices began to decline.
The problem is that today, even if fuel was free, the industry is facing some of the biggest challenges it's ever seen, brought on by the recession plaguing businesses of every size in every industry.
It's the fundamental law of supply and demand.
Tight credit restricts buyers who need financing to buy goods.
As spending is reined in, purchasing declines and with it the number of loads that need to be hauled-the demand part of the equation.
On top of that, more drivers are competing for fewer loads, so the supply of transportation options far exceeds the demand for it.
Even if a driver can find a load to haul, because of the intense competition for work, the shipper can easily negotiate lower prices making many runs unprofitable before the truck even leaves the loading dock.
It's a vicious cycle, and soon truckers will be happy if they can get one trip per month.
For the trucking company this is grim news indeed because regardless of how often the equipment is being used, the monthly payment on it will remain the same.
Even if the truck is sitting idle like a shiny souvenir in the parking lot, payments will continue, at least while there's still money to pay them.
When the money runs out, the truck gets repossessed and another business bites the dust.
Okay, so we can all agree that the problems are already bad and getting worse.
The question is how do you solve it.
The short answer is that you can't-the problems plaguing the transportation are far beyond the scope of any one person-any one company even-to solve.
It's taken years for it to get this bad, and it will take years for it to get better.
Based on that, for a truck driver today, it is probably time to find a new career.
Which is easier than it sounds-that's right, easier.
As a truck driver, you've made your living on the highway.
You can still do that-just on a different highway.
That highway is the information superhighway-the internet.
There are opportunities galore on the internet in the form of online marketing businesses that you can run from your own home.
They are lucrative, relatively inexpensive-a lot less than a truck-and pretty easy to learn.
Go online and do some research.
Find a turnkey 'business in a box' and get started on the information superhighway-your road to financial security and freedom.
