How to Clear Large Rocks From Soil
- 1). Uncover large rocks with a shovel by digging away the soil around them. Dig a trench around the uncovered rock that is 2 feet on each side.
- 2). Examine the rock before shifting it. The size and shape of a rock indicate the best means of moving it. Flat rocks may be moved with a dolly. Round rocks may be moved with a wheel barrow. Large, cumbersome rocks that may not be moved with either can be dragged with a winch.
- 3). Insert a pry bar under the edge of the rock. Place a smaller rock under the pry bar to serve as a fulcrum. Push down on the raised end of the pry bar to lever the rock upward.
- 4). Shift and roll the rock onto the dolly or into the wheel barrow. Or wrap the cable from a winch around the rock and attach the loose end around the taut end of the cable with a hook.
- 5). Move the rock by rolling it away in the wheel barrow or on the dolly, or drag the rock using the winch.
