Easy Do it Yourself Plant Stand
- Build your own rolling plant stand from a serving tray. This method is suitable for a large and heavy potted plant such as ficus. Choose a sturdy tray made from heavy plastic or other waterproof material. Make sure that it measures a little larger than the bottom diameter of your pot. Drill through the tray in three or four equidistant places near the edges and attach rolling casters. Place the plant on the rolling tray, and move the plant easily from its favorite window to the sink for watering.
If your tray is lightweight, but you like its appearance, use it anyway. Cut a piece of plywood just a bit smaller than the tray, and mount the casters to this sturdy reinforcement. Place the tray on top of the plywood for a finished look. If you can't find a waterproof tray for your plant stand, be sure to place the pot in a plant pot saucer to catch water before setting it on your rolling tray stand. - A set of nesting tables serves as a plant stand with flexibility. Arrange the three or four tables of varying heights so that each one holds a plant. Position them close together. Experiment until the tables and plants form an eye-pleasing display, and each plant gets the amount of light that it requires. Top each table with a slate tile or paving stone. This will make a sturdy and water resistant surface on which to place each plant.
Alternatively, if you have three or four small tables of varying heights, these can be grouped together to form a multilevel plant stand. Give them a coat of paint in one color for a unified look.
Use trash cans or other containers as a plant stand. Turn a trash can upside down and place your plant saucer on top of the base. Use milk crates and plastic bins in this way and camouflage them with a decorative fabric drape.
For safety, especially with small children, secure a taller plant stand to the wall to prevent heavy pots and soil from falling.
