What Is the Toyota Tacoma X-Runner RTR Pickup Truck?

Toyota built the Tacoma X-Runner RTR (Ready to Race) pickup truck for the 2010 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, calling it a "parts-bin" build (because all but a couple of the RTR's components were drawn from existing Toyota parts).

On its surface, you'll see a few differences between the RTR and a stock X-Runner. The silver and red paint scheme and extra graphics, of course (the 95 on RTR's door signifies the first model year that Tacoma trucks were sold in the U.S.).

The truck's 15-inch steel wheels are stock, but were widened to 10-inches for the rear position, where they're mounted with Goodyear Eagle Dragway Specials.

You'll find major customizations under X-Runner RTR's skin, where the truck becomes a blend of Tacoma and Tundra. The big truck's 5.7-liter V8 and 6-speed transmission fit into Tacoma's engine compartment without modifications (that surprised me, I didn't realize there was enough extra space in there for the V8). A TRD Supercharger kit put the truck closer to its ready to race name-tag, upping horsepower to 504 and torque to 550 lb.-ft.

Toyota narrowed Tundra's stock rear axle by 5.7-inches to fit the Tacoma's rear-track width, and the X-Runner's stance was lowered by 4.5-inches. The exhaust was moved from behind the passenger side rear wheel to underneath the cab, allowing for more rear axle travel without interference. An Eaton-designed TRD (prototype) limited slip differential helps put the truck's power to the ground.

Brakes remain the same as stock, and so do ABS, Vehicle Stability Control and traction control.

The two non-Toyota components used to build the X-Runner RTS: traction bars and drive-line shaft.

Could you build a similar truck? Sure, but don't plan on a quick transition. Tundra and Tacoma have completely different wiring harnesses, sensors and computers, so be prepared to make major customizations to those areas as you're swapping parts.
