    Physical Training

    • At boot camp, Marines are sent through an obstacle course that builds their upper body strength and increases their agility. They also undergo martial arts training and run distances between three to nine miles while carrying full gear and supplies. Active duty Marines are required to take a semi-annual combat fitness test to ensure they withstand the rigors of combat. According to Military Advantage's website, the Marine Corps Combat Fitness test requires Marines to sprint a timed 880 yards, repeatedly lift a 30-pound ammunition can overhead for two minutes and complete a timed 300-yard shuttle run.

    Combat training

    • Marines learn how to fire an M16 rifle accurately from a variety of positions. They are also taught how to load their weapon both quickly and safely. Marines are regularly tested on their marksmanship while they are in service. In addition to their rifle, Marines are trained how to fight in close combat situations with their bayonet, which is a knife on their rifle that can be removed.

    Classroom training

    • Marines do not do all their training in the field. Some of it also takes place in the classroom. Marines learn and are tested on the history, culture and traditions of the Marines.

    Readiness

    • The readiness of Marine Corps combat units is evaluated through simulated combat situations that prepare battalions or squadrons for all conceivable wartime scenarios. Combat scenarios may require Marines to counter improvised explosive devices or practice saving the lives of their fellow Marines by utilizing their First Aid skills. Marines also undergo urban combat training which instructs them on room-clearing techniques and prepares them for close-quarter battle.
