    • 1). Check with your state's social work licensing board to find out specific education and experience requirements you must have to practice as a licensed clinical social worker in your state. For example, in Texas, you must meet the Department of State Health's requirements, which includes passing the state's jurisprudence exam.

    • 2). Find a job in the social work field where you can get supervised experience. Two years of supervised social work experience is necessary to take the clinical social worker examination from the American Social Work Boards (ASWB), which administers social work licensing exams.

    • 3). Apply to your state's social work licensing board to be a licensed clinical social worker and request permission to take the clinical social worker exam from the ASWB.

    • 4). Register for and take the exam by calling 1-888-579-3926 or by registering on ASWB's website. Find study material available for purchase on the ASWB website. As of 2010, the study guide is $30, and the online prctice test is $75. The exam fee is $260, and the registration fee is $30. Your state will issue the license when you pass the exam and meet all of its other licensing requirements.
