How to Use Crushed Coal to Absorb Oil
- 1). Blot up as much of the oil as possible with paper towels. Dispose of the towels in an appropriate receptacle. Typically, placing the towels in a plastic bag provides enough protection to avoid fire hazards. Call your local waste management facility to check oil disposal regulations in your area.
- 2). Sprinkle the oil stain with crushed coal. Place a 1/2-inch layer of coal over the stain. Place a paper towel over the stain and place a heavy weight over the top of the towel. Allow the coal to soak up the oil for about 24 hours.
- 3). Sweep the crushed coal into the dustpan using a small brush.
- 4). Clean up any remaining oil by scrubbing the area with a grease-fighting soap and the small brush. Rinse the area with clean water to dispose of soap residue.
