Kelp & Hair Growth
- Kelp is a type of brown algae seaweed that grows in shallow areas of the ocean. There are more than 300 different types of kelp. The plant was once used as a source of soda ash for making glass. It has long been used as a food and as a source of iodine and is now considered to hold many health benefits.
- Kelp can assist hair growth in humans by providing more iodine in the diet. Iodine is essential for the normal production of hormones in the thyroid gland. Kelp also contains minerals such as calcium, iron, potassium and magnesium.
- Many forms of kelp are on the market and may be used those who want to assist hair growth. Kelp can be taken in its natural state as an ingredient in smoothies and soups or in dried and flaked form as a seasoning. Those who don't want to eat it as a food can take pills or supplement powders that contain kelp.
- The adult recommended serving or dose of kelp is about 150 mcg per day, but the requirement may be higher for those who are deficient in iodine or other minerals contained in kelp.
- Too much kelp in the diet can cause an overdose of iodine. Symptoms of an overdose include abdominal pain, vomiting or a metallic taste in the mouth.
