Insomnia is a fairly common sleep disorder, suffered by hundreds of millions of people year in year out all over the world.
Its classic symptoms are an inability for one to fall asleep for any length of time or total lack of sleep.
These symptoms can last anywhere between a couple of days to years on end.
With more serious degrees of insomnia, other side effects can arise.
There are three main categories of insomnia, they are as follows.
Transient Insomnia The lesser of the three, lasting a day or two, transient insomnia is the result of an isolated incident such as jet lag, becoming over tired from a long shift, or simply drinking too much caffeine.
Transient insomnia is not insomnia in the real sense of the word, yet it still falls into the sleep disorder category.
Acute Insomnia A more advanced level than transient insomnia.
This can last anywhere between a week to a few months.
It is heavily derived from prolonged external factors such as stress from work, the death of a loved one, the stress of moving house or changing jobs.
This type of insomnia usually lasts as long as the factors that gave rise to it remain.
Chronic Insomnia This is the most serious of the insomnia categories, it can last years and can literally drive a person out of their mind.
Symptoms of chronic insomnia are blurred vision or double vision.
An appearance of everything moving in slow motion, total physical and mental fatigue.
Chronic depression, Chronic stress or ongoing physical pain and discomfort are some of the main reasons for chronic insomnia.
What are the causes of insomnia There are many theories and beliefs behind the causes of insomnia, the main ones are as follows:
  • Too much caffeine from coffee, energy bars, slimming pills, wake up pills such as pro plus.
  • Recreational stimulant drugs like cocaine, speed and ecstasy.
  • Environmental factors, jetlag, external noised while trying to sleep.
  • Stress and worry from work, relationships, financial problems.
