Ten Hours of Sleep or 4.5 Hours of Lying There and 5.5 of Sleeping

The other day, I was talking to an acquaintance of mine and he told me that he slept about 10 hours a day.
I thought that was pretty good, and I would sure like to sleep that much, and then he explained that while he was in bed for 10 hours a day, it wasn't all sleeping.
Some he described as relaxation and meditation, but the reality was he was probably having trouble sleeping because he couldn't turn off his mind or did into a sleep state.
Still, I wonder if this counts or not? After all, we know that only one third of the time you spend sleeping is in REM (rapid eye movement) a period of time that we know as dreaming.
If someone sleeps for only 5 1/2 hours per night, but is lying down for 10 hours in total, then they are wasting 4.
5 hours every day doing nothing but lying there trying to get to sleep.
Many doctors will tell you that sleep aids are not all that healthy for you as overtime may turn out to be not such a good idea.
If people use these tools to get to sleep, and feel they need them, then psychologically they will become more and more needed, until they can't sleep without them.
That wouldn't be a good thing.
I asked my acquaintance if he did much exercise.
The answer was no, and that might have something to do with it.
It's hard to sleep when you're not tired.
Would he be better off staying up another 4.
5 hours until he was so tired that he had to sleep? He would go through the next day droggy, but he'd again be tired enough to get to sleep the following day.
Somehow he needs to break the cycle, no one needs to meditate for 4.
5 hours a day - at least I don't think so.
Heck, if he is just going to lie there, he can write some articles for me perhaps? My acquaintance does have a vivid imagination, and he's quite good with spatial concepts, so I enjoy talking to him at the coffee shop.
Is it possible that during those 4.
5 hours that he is thinking in the active mind are making his mind better because he uses his brain more, thus is constantly dreaming up concepts while meditating? These are all good questions for sleep scientists.
If you'd like to learn more about the science of sleep, I would recommend that you go to Stanford University's website and check out their incredible research on the human mind and sleep.
Please consider all this and think on it.
