    • 1). Choose an area to plant the Alleghany viburnum. Ideally, this plant likes full sun and moist, well-drained soil. However, it will tolerate poor and compacted soil, drought and heat, partial shade, and soils of various pH.

    • 2). Dig the soil to a depth of 12 inches with a spade, breaking up clumps and removing rocks. Mix in about 1 inch of organic compost to increase fertility and drainage. Plant the viburnum in a hole twice the size of its root ball and at a depth the same height as its root ball.

    • 3). Water the Alleghany viburnum deeply after planting. Keep the soil moist until new growth starts to appear. Once established, water once weekly, especially through the first growing season. This will help the plant develop a deep root system.

    • 4). Prune the Alleghany viburnum right after flowering to maintain its shape. Do not prune later or you may shear off the buds for next year's flowers.

    • 5). Fertilize the plant with an all-purpose slow-release fertilizer, right after growth starts again in spring. This will provide nutrients for the plant throughout the growing season.
