How to Minimize Waste Disposal in a Home

    • 1). Shop thoughtfully. Avoid products you don't need and cheap items that you are bound to break and throw away. Bring your own bags to the grocery store and choose food products with minimal packaging, such as beans and grains from the bulk bins. Plan your meals carefully so you won't buy more food than you will eat, causing you to throw away more than necessary.

    • 2). Keep a plastic or metal bin in your kitchen for compost. Use it for plant-based food scraps and leftovers that you are not able to consume before they spoil. Also compost biogradable paper such as unbleached napkins or paper towels. Create an outdoor compost pile where you layer your household compost with yard waste materials such as leaves and weeds. Use this organic matter to fertilize your garden rather than purchasing topsoil and compost at the garden store.

    • 3). Separate recyclable items from your household trash. Wash and save glass bottles and jars. (Throw away the lids.) Crush and save cans, as well as paper and plastic bags. If your area has curbside recycling service, sort your recyclables if necessary and set them out on the designated day. If you do not have curbside recycling, save your recyclables and bring them periodically to the nearest recycling facility.

    • 4). Use products you buy as long as you possibly can. Use electronic devices for as long as they are viable rather than quickly replacing them with updated models. Repair appliances rather than replacing them. Reupholster furniture rather than discarding it.
