How to Build Small Snowboard Rails

    Thin Snowboard Rail

    • 1). Set a metal bike rack on a sloped area so one end of the rail along the top of the rack is slightly downhill from the other end. The rack should be at least 4 feet long.

    • 2). Fill sand bags with dirt and place them on either side of the bike rail to help support it and keep it standing up straight under weight and pressure. Also place bags on either end of the rail to create ramps for mounting and dismounting.

    • 3). Pile snow over all of the sandbags and pack it down. You should not have to jump up more than a foot to get from the top of the ramp onto the rail. Pile enough snow on the sides of the rail and on the ground in the area so you will not damage your board if you fall off.

    Wide Snowboard Rail

    • 1). Lay a length of 2-by-4 lumber flat along the center of a length of 1-by-10 lumber. Both pieces of lumber should be the same length, anywhere from 4 to 10 feet long.

    • 2). Screw the boards together with deck screws, using one screw every foot or two.

    • 3). Cut a strip measuring 4 inches wide and 2 inches deep out of the bottom of at least two milk crates, one for each end of the snowboard rail. If the rail is at least 6 feet long, it could help to have another crate in the middle for additional support.

    • 4). Set the 2-by-4 in the grooves you cut out of the milk crates, which will hold the rail in place above the ground. The rail should be sloped slightly downhill to help you slide along it.

    • 5). Pile snow around the crates to keep them from moving and use snow to build a ramp on each side of the rail to help you mount and dismount.
