How to Remove Kwikset Cylinder Knobs
- 1). Remove the two screws that secure the knob to the door. Remove the knob. The bolt and latch mechanism can stay attached to the door.
- 2). Insert the pointed end of the plug removal tool into the center of the cylinder. Turn the spindle until the tabs line up with one of the stems. The stem is a part of the knob that the two screws thread secure to when you install the knob.
- 3). Insert the smaller end of the plug removal tool under the spring housing. The spring housing is a plate that is located at the bottom of the spindle. Push in on the retainer that is located under the retainer. Point the knob toward the floor. The spindle slides away from the knob.
- 4). Place the plug removal tool at an angle along half of the spindle. Press down to release the cylinder casing from the knob.
- 5). Push the cylinder out of the lock. Insert the key into the cylinder at a 45-degree angle. Turn the key clockwise and place the plug follower behind the cylinder. This causes the cylinder to come out of the lock.
