How to pick solar lights for your backyard

Solar lights come in many different shapes, sizes, material and types. Some materials used are plastic, copper, and stainless steel. They come in styles that can be used to light pathways, highlight rock gardens, and accentuate ponds or flower gardens. Some come in animal shapes likes frogs, turtles, dogs, birds, and squirrels. You can also get solar lights in seasonal shapes like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.

Let's say you just invested a large amount of money to improve your backyard but you think it still needs something. You may decide to have it lit up after dark. Lighting up your backyard after dark could require you to hire an electrician to run electrical wires throughout the yard. If you do not want to see the wiring you would have to dig up some of the yard to install them under ground. When it is all said and done, what happens if the lighting just doesn't work out they way you thought it would?

An alternative to the hard-wired lighting would be to install solar lights. Solar lights do not need wires. You can easily move them around to light just the areas you want. Solar lights are more convenient than the hard-wired lights and usually a fraction of the cost.
You also have the added benefit of not having to dig up your yard or hiring an electrician because you can install them yourself.

There are many different types of solar lights. Before selecting a type of solar lights you would need to look at the lay of the land and determine what you want to light up. If you have a walkway, perhaps solar pathway lights would be in order. You could even use solar stepping stone lights as a part of your walkway. If you have a rock garden, maybe consider placing some solar rock lights around the perimeter, which could add that special, something to the area. If you have a special shrub or plant that you would like to see highlighted, a solar spotlight would allow you have it stand out. You may have other areas around your house or yard that you want something a little different. Adding a solar frog, solar dog or solar squirrel light might really add some interest to the area. You may even want to outline your deck with some solar deck lights.

As you can see, there are solar lights for almost any application. You just have to use your imagination and select some. The one main advantage of solar lights is that you can easily move them around till you find the perfect spot that need enhancement.

The one caveat you will need to consider when adding solar lighting is that the lights should be placed in an area that gets some sun during the day. Solar lights have a solar cell that converts sunlight into electricity. This electricity is used to recharge a built-in Ni-Cad battery each day. A photocell sensor automatically turns on the light at night. The light uses that stored energy from the battery to power the light. Each solar light's operating times varies by location and the amount of sunshine for a particular day.

Solar lights can enhance any landscaping project. They allow you to enjoy your yard well into the evening.
