    Greasing the Flapper Ball

    • It has been suggested that using plumber's grease on the flapper ball of the toilet can improve it's functionality. In theory, if the ball is getting stuck or if it is not fitting properly in to the drain, using plumber's grease can correct the problem.

Realigning or Replacing the Flapper Ball

    • If the flapper ball on the toilet is getting stuck or does not fit correctly into the drain, it should be manually realigned. If this does not correct the problem the flapper ball should be replaced.

    Bottom Line

    • Putting plumber's grease on your flapper ball will not improve its functionality. Since the ball is made of plastic, plumbers grease will simply be washed off once the toilet is in use. John D. Wagner of This Old House says that if the flapper or tank ball is misaligned or damaged you should inspect it for cracks, rips or tears. If the flapper is damaged simply unhook it and install a new one.
