Uzbekistan till recent times was the sixth member nation of the CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organisation); a Russian dominated organisation of post-soviet states in defence sector. The other nations are Armenia, Belarus, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Russia. CSTO is considered to be one of the most powerful blocks in central Asia after the break down of Soviet Union in 1990s. It is happening at a time, when Uzbekistan is undergoing water dispute with Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan for the two main rivers of the region, The Amu Darya and Syr Darya. It claims that the building of dams on these rivers by its two neighbouring countries would lead to shortage of water for its farmers during the farming season. Russia has decided to take a neutral stand on it, in spite of the fact that it is the Russian companies which will be constructing the dams.
