    • 1). Choose the style of resume that fits your needs. You don't have to go with a conventional chronological resume if you have long periods with no paid employment. Instead, create a resume that focuses on your functional skills and experience. Do this under skills headings rather than listing chronological time periods in your career. This type of resume is useful to help hide gaps in your work experience.

    • 2). List any relevant volunteer experience that you had if you were at home because of family responsibilities. This could include serving on a school board or work for your church. Explain what skills you employed. You can also list any extra training or education you undertook while at home. If you're applying for a job that includes work with children or has a considerable interpersonal-skills component, you could also highlight your parenting experience as a plus.

    • 3). Organize your resume around your entrepreneurship skills if you were running your own business from home. Entrepreneurship takes tremendous drive, creativity and a capacity for hard work, so you should have plenty to talk about. Explain how your business experience was relevant to the particular position you're now seeking.

    • 4). List your occupation in the regular way if you were completing contract work for a company from home. Under that heading, explain your responsibilities and what skills you developed while undertaking the work. Working from home requires good time management and focus, and you must be extremely self-motivated. Those are assets for any company looking to employ you, so make sure you mention these on your resume.
