For those planters, who have a hankering to eat the fresh, ripe and mouthwatering strawberries but only have a little space to grow them, there is a perfect solution.
It is to grow them in a strawberry pot which is an urn shaped pot and that has to its credit a series of small pockets running along the sides.
The size of the pot should match the number of berries that a planter wishes to grow.
Therefore, the planters mostly choose big pots because the smaller pots have to be watered often.
Strawberries are of three types for example, the June bearing strawberries, the ever-bearing ones, and the day -neutral.
The best choice for cultivating in the pots are the ever-bearing and the day -neutral varieties which provide good yield from late spring to early fall.
Planting strawberries in a pot is a simple process that even small children who are interested in gardening can do.
The pots should be immersed in a tub of water to moist them before planting.
Next, to prevent the soil from leaking out a piece of window screening should be placed over the drainage hole.
The soil should be filled until it reaches the lowest level of the pockets.
The planting should be done in such a way that their crown is above the soil level.
To ensure that the pots gets adequate moisture while watering the plant, a PVC pipe should be inserted in the centre of the pot.
The pot should be placed in an adequate location which enables it to get at least 6 hours of sunlight per day.
Care should be taken to see that the soil which is filled in the pots really helps the plants to grow well.
Filling them with a good organic potting soil in which compost, peat or leaf mould is added ensures high yield of strawberries.
Adding blood meal and bone meal to the soil makes the plants happier and help them to get off to a good start.
Strawberries being shallow-rooted plants, need to be watered frequently otherwise the plants slow down the fruit production.
A diluted seaweed fertilizer needs to be added in timely intervals to accelerate the production of strawberries.
The strawberries should be harvested once they become ripe and attain the rich red color.
Another highlight of these plants are that as they are perennials they give good yield for a number of years if they are taken care of well.
