How to Sanitize Holding Tanks on Campers

    • 1). Disconnect the lines running to each holding tank. Disconnect them slowly to reduce any waste or water splashing in your face. Set holding tanks on a steady surface and check the condition of each one. Then check the condition of the lines and any valves on the devices/lines. Replace any parts as needed.

    • 2). Dump out any waste or water present in the holding tanks. Dump only in approved dumping stations in the campground or RV park. Do not dump the waste or water in a sewage drainage ditch or other unapproved location.

    • 3). Mix one-fourth cup of chlorine bleach and 1 gallon of hot water in a bucket and pour into the first holding tank you want to sanitize. Shake the mixture around in the holding tank and let stand for at least five minutes. Pour out the mixture in an approved dumping area. Next, rinse the holding tank with clean water from a hose. Then re-rinse with clean water. Repeat step for each holding tank you need to sanitize.

    • 4). Blow out the lines leading to the holding tanks with an air hose, then run the bleach/hot water mixture (use the same mixture from step 3) through the lines. Next, run clean water to flush the lines after the mixture.

    • 5). Reconnect the holding tanks to the lines and test the system for any leaks.
