8 Great Books About Love for Your Reading List
Looking for a good love story? Not a romance novel, but a deep, passionate and complicated story about love. These are some of my favorite novels from the past 10 years. They are not overly sweet, but they all have love stories at the center.
•'The Night Circus' by Erin Morgenstern
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern was one of our Top 10 Books of 2011. It is a fantastical story of two magicians who are pitted against each other by their guardians but fall in love through the competition.
•'Major Pettigrew's Last Stand' by Helen Simonson
Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson takes place in Britain and is the story of a friendship between a traditional military man and a Pakistani immigrant. They are both older and their spouses have died in recent years. Their relationship challenges their long held beliefs and the town. It is a funny, ultimately feel good novel. Major Pettigrew's Last Stand was published in 2010.
•'Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet' by Jamie Ford
Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford takes place during World War II. A young Chinese boy and young Japanese girl become friends and eventually fall in love, but their relationship is tested when the girl and her family is sent to an internment camp. This is a sweet piece of historical fiction that shows the role of honor in love. Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet was released in 2009.
•'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society' by M.Shaffer and A. Barrows
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows was one of our Top 10 Books of 2008. The novel takes place in England just after World War II. As a journalist investigates the experiences of some residents of the island of Guernsey during the Nazi occupation, she falls in love with the whole community and a romance develops without either person realizing it.
•'Beginner's Greek' by James Collins
Beginner's Greek by James Collins was also one of our Top 10 Books of 2008. It is a comic novel that plays on Greek tragedy. Holly and Peter fall in love on an airplane, but other relationships and circumstances keep them apart for many years.
•'The Splendor of Silence' by Indu Sundaresan
The Splendor of Silence by Indu Sundaresan takes place in India in 1942. It is a love story between an Indian woman and an American soldier. It was one of our Top 10 Books of 2006.
•'Water for Elephants' by Sara Gruen
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen is about Jacob Jankowski's life with the "Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth" and his love for the star performer, Marlena. It was one of our Top 10 Books of 2006.
•'The Time Traveler's Wife' by Audrey Niffenegger
The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger has characters you will love, a plot like none other and a love story that is timeless. It is intelligent and touching. It was first released in 2004.
