How to Install a Bamboo Fence
- 1). Purchase: First you will need to choose the type of bamboo fence you want to use. There are two varieties: split reed and full reed. While full reed offers better privacy due to smaller gaps between the individual reeds, split reed fencing is thicker and tougher, as it is made from more mature bamboo reeds. You will also need to choose a height, usually 4- or 6-foot fencing. If you are installing the bamboo as a stand-alone fence, split reed is a better choice as it is sturdier. If you plan to attach it to an existing fence, full reed will probably look better.
- 2). Preparation: Decide how you will attach the bamboo reed fencing to your existing fence or fence posts. Clear plastic zip ties work perfectly for this purpose, or if you prefer, you can use garden wire. Installation is best done with two people (one to hold the fence up while the other attaches it), so ask a friend or family member to help.

Begin Installation: Set the roll of bamboo fencing at a corner and attach the end to the corner fence post using the zip ties or wire. Affix the bamboo in at least 3 locations (bottom, middle, and top) to ensure it will stay put--4 locations is even better for a long-term installation. Continue down the fence line until the first roll is completely installed. - 4). Finish Installation: If you need to add another roll of fencing, be sure to overlap the two rolls by one inch to avoid a gap. Sometimes installation requires trimming a portion of the fence. Simply sever the galvanized wires that holds the reeds together, remove one reed, and twist the ends of the wires together.
- 5). Maintenance: Bamboo fencing is virtually maintenance-free and will last for many years to come. However, you should remove climbing vines and avoid damage from children and pets, as the reeds can break.
