How to Get Help Paying Rent for the Disabled

    • 1). Apply for Social Security online by going to ssa.gov and clicking "Apply for Disability." This application has two parts: one that asks general personal information and another that asks for details about your disability. Don't worry if you don't have all of the evidence you need: you can save your application and return to it later.

    • 2). Visit your local Social Security office to apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and other state programs that may apply to you. If you are approved for SSI, you'll receive a monthly check that can be used towards rent, if you choose. You may also qualify for food stamps or other low-income financial aid to offset your daily expenses.

    • 3). Go to Benefits.gov to find more federal benefits to help you in your situation. You may qualify to live in a government-subsidized home with reduced rent, or you may qualify for assistance with paying your electric bills. The website will show you where to go to apply for the benefit of your choice, and once you're approved, these programs can help free up some extra cash for your rent.
